Botany Department was started during the year 1971 for Pre-university degree course and got established as allied Department for B.Sc., Zoology students in the year 1974. B.Sc., Botany degree was started during the academic year 2013-2014 with both Tamil and English medium. The department got recognized for both full time and part time research programmes of Botany (Ph.D) from 2023-24 academic year. An indigenous medicinal garden was established to inculcate awareness about traditional herbal medicine.The Botany Department began functioning from the colleges inception. Initially, the subject was taught as an allied subject to B.Sc. Physics and Chemistry students. The B.Sc. (Botany) program, with Zoology and Chemistry as ancillary subjects, was introduced in year 1974.The initial sanctioned strength was 24 students each for the English and Tamil mediums.

Permanent affiliation for the B.Sc. (Botany) course was granted by Bharathiar University via BU/R/A1-B/2013/22754, Date -28.10.2013. Recognition for the Ph.D. programs was granted, subject to Bharathiar Universitys rules and regulations, from the year 2023-24.
