The Department of Economics at LRG Government Arts College for Women in Tirupur was established in 1998, underscoring the institutions dedication to comprehensive arts education. The department focuses on value-based education that fosters national development by enhancing global competencies and skills necessary to tackle contemporary challenges. The undergraduate (UG) program commenced in 1998, followed by the introduction of the M.A. Economics program in 2013. Additionally, full-time and part-time M.Phil and Ph.D. programs were launched in 2018.The department has thrived due to the commitment of its faculty, who actively cultivate the virtues of the student community. It has implemented various research programs and continues to advance through academic contributions, nurturing young minds in the field of economics. The UG program offers a B.A. in Economics in both English and Tamil, with a sanctioned strength of 40 students in each medium. The PG program in Economics has a sanctioned strength of 20. As Tirupur is an industrial hub for knitwear manufacturing, there is a substantial demand for candidates with knowledge in economics, leading many local students to pursue courses offered by the department.Currently, the department consists of 11 faculty members, including 6 regular faculty appointed by the Directorate of Collegiate Education, 3 government guest lecturers, and 2 faculty members associated with the Parent-Teacher Association. All faculty members play a crucial role in imparting knowledge to students in various areas, such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, econometrics, and computer applications in economics.The faculty not only support academic achievement but also inspire students to publish their research articles in respected national and international journals. The department regularly holds association meetings to monitor student progress and organizes various activities each academic year, including student association meetings, educational tours, and cultural events.The Department of Economics also offers access to a well-stocked library, which contains a wealth of textbooks and resource materials for academic and research purposes. With approximately 1,700 reference books related to economics and general knowledge, the library helps foster a comprehensive understanding of the subject among students.The Economics Department is committed to creating a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment where students can develop a deep understanding of economic principles and their applications in the real world. Through rigorous coursework, research opportunities, and practical experiences, the department equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to become informed citizens, critical thinkers, and successful professionals. By examining the complexities of economic systems, analyzing market trends, and evaluating policy implications, our students are empowered to make meaningful contributions to the economic well-being of individuals, communities, and nations.
